Failing Vision After Cataract Operation
There are many incidents widely reported wherein the patients will be facing difficulties with eye sight even after completing the cataract operation. Gradually they will start experiencing trouble again with the eye sight after correcting it ones. This situation is referred as posterior capsule opacity also referred as after cataract. Let’s check the details on this situation through this article.
You can always compare your eyes with a camera. Just like the lens of the camera you can find a natural lens on your eyes. This lens is usually situated behind the pupil. The natural lens is very small in size similar to the disc or M & M sweets. You will start facing troubles with eye sight when your lens becomes defective. In order to correct this problem you will have to replace the natural lens with an artificial lens through cataract operation.
The lens is very small and looks like a disc. It has a thin layer outside the inner lens. This layer is known as the lens capsule. The lens capsule is having two major surfaces: anterior surface and posterior surface. The outer layer is called the posterior layer and it resides behind the natural lens. The anterior lens occupies the portion in front of the natural lens. When you start facing a blurred vision, you will have to discard the portion of the anterior lens and this will pave way to access the cloudy lens surface. The posterior end is maintained as such without making any changes. The cloudy portion will be replaced by an artificial lens. This is the phenomenon happening in the modern cataract operation.
The natural lens in the eye will be removed and it will be replaced by the lens implant. This is actually the artificial lens made in order to fit in the empty hole after removing the natural lens. This empty hole is referred as the capsular bag in medical science. This lens implant is supported by the posterior end of the lens capsule that lies behind the implant. This can also be compared to removing a small piece of sugar in order to get the chocolate from it thereby leaving rest of the sugar coating there itself.
While performing the operation, all the surgeons will try their level best to keep the posterior portion of the lens capsule there itself without shaking. This is because it prevents in mixing the jelly portion of the eye from the fluids in the front portion of the eye. It will also keep the natural compartment for the lens without making any changes. It also helps in keeping the vitreous from moving while conducting the operation as it can cause lot of troubles while performing the surgery.
Usually after performing the cataract surgery, the posterior end will remain transparent and clear. But sometimes, due to some reason this posterior portion can become opaque which will cause difficulties in capturing a clear vision. This is because of the condition referred as posterior capsular opacity commonly referred as PCO by eye specialist. This can be easily corrected by undergoing laser surgery which will take only minutes to complete the process. The procedure is painless and is referred as YAG laser posterior capsulotomy. This laser treatment works by creating a hole at the center of the posterior end and this will help in cleaning all those that was preventing a clear eye sight. You will be able to regain your healthy eye sight within few minutes of completing this laser treatment.
